Two $1,000 awards were presented to St. Ann School in Arlington, Virginia for their bone sculpture made of milk cartons, and to Thomas Jefferson High School in Alexandria, Virginia for an interactive computer presentation. Hammond Middle School in Alexandria, VA – Lunch menu St. Theresa in Ashburn, VA – "Calcium" remake of Aretha Franklin’s "R-E-S-P-E-C-T" Thomas Jefferson in Alexandria, VA – Web site Boys and Girls Club in Alexandria, VA – Skit St. Augustine in D.C. – Photo Grace Lutheran in Falls Church, VA – Poster Nativity Catholic in Burke, VA – Movie/video Youth Visions in D.C. – Poster All other finalist entries received a $50 cash award. "These entries accomplished something that we, as adults, have failed to do, and that is communicate the importance of calcium nutrition to teens," said Roberta MacDonald, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Cabot Cheese. "Our goal was to engage teens in communicating the calcium message to their peers. Given today’s success, we hope and expect to roll the Cabot Calcium Crisis Challenge out to teens in other cities." The Cabot Calcium Crisis Challenge was created in response to statistics showing that 75 percent of teenagers do not get enough calcium. Adequate calcium during the bone building years is critical to preventing osteoporosis and other health problems later in life. Teenagers from the DC, Virginia and Maryland area were challenged to create a message about the importance of calcium nutrition that would influence their peers. Over 600 youths representing 22 organizations from the metro area participated in the Challenge, submitting a total of 309 entries. The 17 grand-prize winners were selected from 70 finalists on display at the National Museum of Natural History. An esteemed panel of judges reviewed the entries and evaluated them on creativity, persuasiveness, quality of presentation, and overall effectiveness. Judges included Katy Button, General Manager of the Washington Freedom; Bruno Frohlich, Physical Anthropologist for the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History; Usha Kalro, University of the District of Columbia; Bonnie Tandy LeBlang, food writer, author and syndicated columnist; John Malcolm, dairy farmer for Cabot Creamery; Janet Tenney, Manager of Nutrition Programs for Giant Food; and two students from the original team that designed the Calcium Crisis Challenge. The Cabot Calcium Crisis Challenge launched in the DC metro area with sponsorship from the dairy farmers of Cabot Creamery (founding sponsor) and the Washington Freedom, Giant Food Inc., Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association, American Dairy Association, and NBC4.
