Billings Farm
Woodstock, Vermont

It’s a lazy July evening as BJ Hanfield lets the Jerseys of Billings Farm out into the fields after their milking. This time-honored procession is called “the parade.” It’s grand to see these beautiful ladies move down the fence-lined lane as the shadows deepen all around. BJ Hanfield comes from a proud dairy farming family. His parents’ Brandon farm boasts a world champion Ayrshire. Here, however, Jerseys rule, and there are champions everywhere. “They are so comfortable and well composed, they can all behand led,” BJ says proudly. As he shuts the gates and heads toward his own dinner, although they’re separated from him by the fence, the herd follows BJ. They want to be near this wise, kindly man who cares for them and understands their ways.
