The Whalen Farm lies tucked up along the slope above East Randolph, just over the Tunbridge line. On this September day the entire family is piling into the truck and headed to the Tunbridge World’s Fair as I arrive to take photographs of the cows. “Help yourself to as many pictures as you want,” says Mike Whalen good-naturedly.

Later, after pictures have been taken in the high fields, I visit with their collie, Mary, and buy tomatoes from their roadside vegetable stand. My change is made “on the honor system,” as the card instructs, from the plastic container next to the green beans and lettuce.
