Elm Rock Farm
Ashaway, RI

Elm Rock Farm has been in the Kenyon Family since 1889. Richard Kenyon purchased this Rhode Island 250 acre mix of forest, wetland and pasture from his mother after his father died in 1965.

"Up till ten years ago we grew corn. Now everything is in pasture and we supplement with purchased silage and hay," Richard observed, as his daughter, Trina, milked the seventy cows with help from her husband Gary, and children Lucas, Johanna, and Gabrielle. Gary, a cabinet maker, is locating a shop at the farm, as his family prepares to continue here for another generation.

Traditions are important here. Richard's dad was partial to Ayshire's, and they still predominate, although a few Holsteins are mixed in. Much has changed over the years, however. This coastal area is faster paced than it was fifty years ago when Richard delivered eggs and other produce to Katherine Hepburn's family home.

The farm lies alongside I-95, just north of exit 1, and Cabot photographer Bob Eddy arrived here during milking on a beautiful warm Rhode Island spring evening. The following morning, he returned to see the herd turned out in fields as pretty as any you will see here in the Ocean State, or anywhere else.
